In Conversation with the Incomparable Iris Apfel

Iris Apfel is an American original. Young at 95, Iris is one of the most stylish, vivacious, and iconic individuals you will ever come across. Prior to becoming a fashion icon, she was known for her impeccable interior design work. In fact, she completed restoration projects at the White House for nine different presidents. Now, recognized for her wit with accessories and humorous quotes, her signature item is oversized glasses. Starting in September of 2005, she had a personal exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art entitled Rara Avis, spotlighting her style through accessories and fashion. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Iris, and she is my all-time inspiration. I am very proud to have had the incredible honor of interviewing Iris Apfel. I hope you enjoy her answers as much as I loved interviewing her.

How would you define your personal style?
I never define that.  It’s for other people to do.

Where did you get the idea to wear larger glasses?
When I finally had to wear glasses, I thought I might as well wear glasses! When I put them on, everybody would say, “Why are you wearing such large spectacles?” I would say, “The bigger to see you!” I like large glasses; I think they fit my face, and they’re fun. I found my original ones in the flea market, years and years ago.

How do you feel fashion and interior design meet?
They don’t meet; they are really all part of the same thing. It’s all an expression of  individuality. I love individuality, and it all grows out of the same experience of sensibility.   I think people should rely on their own taste and feelings a little bit more than they do.

What is your favorite quote that you’ve said?
Oh, I don’t have any favorite quotes. I just say what I say when I think it and hope that other people like it.

What is your favorite shade of lipstick?
I like bright, bright, bright red. And I also like bright, bright, bright, shocking pink. I like to make a statement if I’m going to bother, otherwise why bother? The only makeup that I use on a normal day is a moisturizer and lipstick.

Who is the most interesting person with whom you have had dinner?
Oh my goodness, that would be very hard to say. I have a lot of interesting friends, and they are all interesting to me in different ways. It would be very hard to single it out. It’s like being a Momma, which is your most interesting child?

What is one accessory you cannot live without?
My big, crazy eyeglasses.

Do you have a favorite designer?
Ralph Rucci. I love his clothes, and I love a lot of designers. Many are my friends. Ralph is so brilliant with the way he cuts, and I think he’s a master.

How do you feel about mixing high and low pieces?
That’s what I’m famous for! I never even realized. If I like something, I don’t care what it is.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
I think what my father told me, “Never to expect anything much from anybody. And if you feel that way, if anybody does something nice for you, you will be absolutely thrilled and excited and overjoyed. And if nobody does anything for you, you won’t be disappointed.”
