Toupees and Hair Gel and Grey, Oh My!

When I first published this blog post, I could not decide whether to categorize it under beauty or current events. If I had the opportunity to interview Donald Trump’s hair stylist (or toupee maker?) I would jump at the chance.I can imagine the headline now: Fact or Fiction: The Person Behind Donald Trump’s Hair. Wouldn’t you click on the article if you saw it online or at least consider doing so? I certainly would!

The 2016 Presidential Election has been full of surprises to say the least, and I have to admit, whenever I think of Donald Trump, my mind immediately goes to his hair. Is it real? What does it actually look like in person? Is it blonde, or is it yellow? I’ve always wanted to know.

Before stating the obvious about Trump’s hair, however, I have to talk about Ted Cruz despite the fact that he suspended his campaign earlier this week. He has an overly crisp part and uses a LOT of product. It can’t be good for his hair; it must feel like sticks! I have to give him some credit, though: his hairstyle is not as bad as some, but it is definitely not presidential, and it looks too shiny on camera.

His strands are as unwavering as his stance on religion and faith in God. No deep conditioning treatment could change his extreme views or hairstyle. Yes, I do realize that the picture of Cruz below is not the most flattering, but that’s real life! Sadly, not everyone can be as photogenic as Blake Lively. Speaking of hair, she has great hair.

Even though appearance matters in politics, politicians do not want anyone to think that trivial things, such as hair color and the right tie are important. However, no decision is made without thinking behind it. Politicians use anything and everything at their disposal to capture people’s votes across the United States and have people understand their values and intentions from a few viral videos, and appearance plays a large role.

Do you think Hillary Clinton could wake up one day, take an hour to get a blow dry, and decide to try a new hairstyle?

She could, but voters across America would likely not react with support and enthusiasm. People were shocked and upset to hear she spent $600 on a haircut at a salon in New York City last year. The amount of money spent may be excessive, but I must admit, I do love the feeling of clean, fresh hair. I love blow dries too much — I could never run for President!

Hair. That topic brings me back to the one and only Donald Trump. His coiffure has now become iconic and a symbol of this election; unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year, you’ve at least heard the two words “hair” and “Donald Trump” in the same sentence. It’s recognizable. It’s iconic. It’s a mystery. But is it presidential? I suppose only time will tell.

The Donald’s hair is obviously the most discussed and debated hair of all the candidates. Prior to his overly blonde (or yellow?) locks, he used to have naturally brown hair. How crazy is that?!

Rand Paul. Even though his name has been long forgotten by American voters, his curly hair attracted much attention, and it made him appear frazzled and unorganized during the early televised debates. I can’t really decide what look he was going for when he was on the campaign trail a few months ago; it appeared to be a combination of a poodle and too much hair gel.

John Kasich. He was the third man in a two-man and now one-man race before he suspended his presidential bid earlier this week, following Ted Cruz’s announcement. His hair was widely discussed on Twitter a few weeks ago, with Ana Marie Cox tweeting, “I want to take Kasich’s hair home and give it a shower and a meal.” Yikes.

I have been a news junkie ever since I can remember, and I enjoy discussing all forms of news, whether it be CNN Headlines, Us Weekly, or anything in between. I hope you enjoyed my preposterous article about some of the current and former GOP candidates’ hairstyles in this election as much as I loved writing it. I chose to create an outlandish, absurd piece because sometimes that is the very definition of politics.
