In Conversation with Julie Pasquet of Bijoux de Famille

From the moment I first saw a set of bangles from Bijoux de Famille, I instantly wanted to know the entire story behind the quirky, innovative brand. Founded by Julie Pasquet, the jewelry line sells everything from Karl & Anna earrings to embellished bracelets covered in famous world leaders. Julie’s designs offer a humorous take on fashion and will be sure to make anyone smile. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of interviewing Julie, and I am so thrilled to feature such an inspiring entrepreneur and designer on The Zeitgeist. In the interview, Julie discusses the best part of her job, her personal style icon, advice to young entrepreneurs, and more. Enjoy! XO

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in the jewelry industry? What inspired you?
I realized it really late actually, at the end of my studies! But when I think about it, I have been making jewelry since I was five or six years old. Remember those crocodile beads? It was obvious, finally!

I wear my fashion icon bracelet nearly every day, and I always receive so many compliments on it! How did you come up with the idea to feature notable people on your designs?
I really like to play with icons, symbols, and things that are in our daily lives and to have a different point of view on them. For me, it’s so much fun to work on the fashion icons since I actually work in the fashion industry. They’re so cute, no?

Speaking of fashion, who is your personal style icon?
Well, I was never born to be a follower, and I don’t like the idea of copying the style of someone else. I love too many styles for that! But if I had to name one style icon, it would be miss-never-too-much-jewelry-and-so-chic-even-at-94-years-old Iris Apfel.

What is the best thing that has happened to you since founding Bijoux de Famille?
Wahoo, so many things! I have met crazy people, been to crazy places, and discovered new techniques and possibilities. I have learned a lot about myself as well.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when starting your own company, and how did you overcome it?
To have your own company is such a daily challenge! I faced several challenges but maybe the worst was to keep going even when business was hard. Also, when running a business, you have to deal with boring stuff while staying creative… This is not easy!

If you could collaborate with anyone to create an accessory, whom would you choose?
Since prints are a big part of my creations, I would love to collaborate with a graphic artist like Darcel. His characters and ideas totally fit with my designs.

What is the best part of your job?
Creation! You build the idea, the concept, and you let it grow. You think about the technique, and then the prototypes arrive. It’s a magical feeling — and when someone wears your products, it’s this amazing sensation! I’m always glad to provide some fun and humor to fashion — and life!

What piece of advice do you have to share with young entrepreneurs?

Be strong and let nothing bring you down, even when it’s hard! Also, if you trust yourself, people will trust you. And drink coffee!
